The day has been designed to meet with the needs of medical and health care practitioners ,doctors, consultants, physiotherapist, occupational therapists, Radiographers, nurses, managers AHP working in acute or community based settings working in the NHS or private practice.

Practitioners have an obligation to produce clear and concise documentation and records that will stand up under rigorous public legal scrutiny.

Legal documentation and record keeping are valuable because of the information contained and the information is only usable if it is correctly and legibly recorded in the first place. There are a number of legal issues that contribute to effective documentation and record keeping. Through case studies and exercises, this day aims to assist the delegate to produce high quality documents and records thus reducing the risk of being the subject of a searching public cross-examination in the courts.

During the programme, the delegate will:

* Recognise and practice a range of writing techniques, which can assist with the production of clear and concise documentation and records;
* Analyse the implications of poor record keeping within a legal environment together with methods for improving current practice;
* Understand how courts interpret what you write – or what you omit – to enable you to assess and improve your record keeping technique;
* Develop the skills to produce documentation and records with confidence.

With case studies and practical exercises, the day aims to answer these questions and many more to assist the delegate to produce high quality documents and records thus reducing the risk of being the subject of a searching public cross-examination in the courts.

Erasmus Master Class in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Care
Erasmus University Medical Center are very pleased to welcome you here in Rotterdam for their 4th International Erasmus Master Class on Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, this year focussing on the “Obese Patient” (EMCOP 2010).

After having had two Master Classes on the older patient and one on acute respiratory failure, this year’s course will deal with another important topic: Obesity and its impact on perioperative care.

Obesity has become a pandemic phenomenon and is linked to many medical and logistical challenges. This is certainly a problem for anesthesiologists and other peri-operative professionals caring for these patients.

Their panel of international experts experienced in the field of obesity will cover and highlight all relevant aspects dealing with obesity in the perioperative patient. Previous feedback suggests that this year’s Master Class should have no parallel sessions and no poster-presentations, in lieu thereof we will have two days of interactive lectures by selected and dedicated speakers. There will be optional tele-voting and time for discussion.

Dignity and choice in end of life care: the role of social workers - (Conference)
Ensuring that people can experience dignity and choice in end of life care is a target for all. Research with people receiving end of life care indicates that many wish to have the choice to die at home, and if that is not available, for their end of life care to be delivered in a setting which is respectful of their wishes and provides dignity. This national conference is the first of its kind and will focus on the unique role which social workers have in facilitating the fulfilment of the intention to provide choice and dignity. The role of other professions is well known to the general public, but there is a growing awareness that in their important position of being able to enable people, social workers can have a positive impact on people’s experiences as they approach the end of their lives. The conference will examine how this can be achieved in a variety of settings and look at innovative practice in how services can be personalised and increase the quality of care experienced. The presenters and workshop leaders will also discuss how important considerations in the areas of ethnicity and spirituality can be used to ensure that experiences for people and their families are as positive as possible.

Aims of the conference:

* To discuss the unique role of social workers in enabling choice and ensuring dignity
* To demonstrate the importance of working in multi-professional groups to ensure that care is consistent and of high quality
* To understand factors that can improve the experiences of people and their families.

Return to Professional Practice - (Short Course)
This unit is designed to enable nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses to return to practice with confidence and competence. Therefore the unit adopts a flexible approach to learning and whilst this is in part determined by NMC requirements, this approach also reflects an appreciation for the constraints which returnees often have on their time.

The unit will enable practitioners to experience practice in a health care setting agreed between them and a supporting practice provider. The student will also focus on health and social trends and professional issues relevant to their professional background and to be supported in this.

There is 40 hours of classroom contact time based around one day per week, 10.00 to 2.30, which will take place in either Luton or Aylesbury. Wherever possible this is within school term time only. A minimum of 75 hours within clinical practice is required for nurses and for returning midwives clinical hours will be determined by the Local Supervising Authority.

The student will also focus on health and social trends and professional issues relevant to their professional background and will be supported in this.

Areas of study include:

* Research
* Study skills and personal effectiveness
* Health and social policy
* Quality care and clinical governance
* NMC Code of Conduct
* Record keeping
* Nursing theory
* Drug calculations
* Legal issues.
Additional InformationUndertaking a Return to Practice programme is a mandatory requirement for those practitioners who are unable to meet the PREP (CPD) practice standard (NMC 2002). For the most part practitioners will have a lapsed registration, however others with live registration may also seek to undertake this module and are not excluded.
RequirementsStudents must have been out of practice for 5 years or its equivalent under NMC rules.
A break in service is defined by the NMC as practising by virtue of a specific qualification, for fewer than 100 working days, or 750 hours, in the preceding five years.
